WHAT IS THE DIFFERENT VOLUME OF STEEL ?

What is the specific gravity of steel? Not everyone is knowledgeable about the steel industry as well as the steel fabrication structure. How to apply each type of steel to suit each type of project?

A lot of people confuse the mass of steel with the density of steel. However, they are two completely different concepts, so the formula and calculation method are also different.
The specific gravity of steel or the specific gravity of steel helps us to calculate the weight of the member accurately.

What is steel?

Steel is an alloy with the main component being iron (Fe) melted with carbon (C) and some other chemical elements (Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Ni, Mo, Mg, Cu...).

The chemical elements in steel alloys and their content have a role in regulating the hardness, elasticity, ductility/ ductility, oxidation resistance and strength of steel. Because of this diversity, there are more than 3,000 types of steel in the world.

So what is the density of steel? What is the density of steel?

The density of steel is defined as the mass per unit volume of that material. The symbol is: m

m of standard steel is 7,850 kG/m3 or 7.85 tons/m3. This means that 1m3 of steel has a mass of 7.85 tons
The specific gravity of steel is the gravitational force of the earth on the steel, it is related to the density by the value g = 9.81. So the specific gravity of steel will be calculated as Density x 9.81. The unit of specific gravity is Kn, while the unit of density will be given in Kg.

The density of steel is different from the density of iron.

m of steel = 7,850 kG/m3
Density of iron = 7,800 kG/m3.
The atomic mass of steel has the main composition of iron and a content of Carbon and some other elements.

Distinguish the specific gravity of steel and iron
Depending on the shape and size of steel such as round steel, section steel, plate steel, steel pipe, we can calculate the weight of that type of steel.

Specific gravity or specific gravity?
Note 1 more thing Mass (unit is kG) and Weight (unit is kN) are 2 different physical quantities.

Weight = Mass x 9.81 ( kN )
The constant 9.81 is the acceleration due to gravity

Formula for calculating specific gravity of steel

The density of steel is 7,850 kG/m3, from which one can calculate the mass of any steel given its shape and length.

Mass ( kg ) = 7,850 x Length L ( m ) x Cross-sectional area A ( m2)
Example of calculating the weight of a round steel bar:

The weight of round steel is calculated by the formula:

Formula for calculating steel weight
m = (7850 * L * 3.14 *d2 )/4

In there:

m: density of steel rod to be calculated (kG)
7850: density of steel (kG/m3)
L: length of round iron (m)
Number of pi = 3.14
d: diameter of steel rod ( m )
We can see that the area of the round steel bar is calculated A = 3.14 * d2 / 4

Applying steel to life

Today, steel is widely used in both heavy industry and the production of civil products to serve people's lives.

Currently, the construction industry and the shipbuilding industry are said to be the two main industries that apply steel to production activities.

Steel in the construction industry is used to make reinforced concrete. Using steel in construction will increase the solidity and certainty of your house.
Besides, steel is also used to build infrastructure, traffic works to serve the needs of the people.

Use of steel in the shipbuilding industry. Thanks to its high strength, heat resistance, good abrasion resistance and easy malleability, people often use steel to build boats. Especially the hull is where the most steel is used to increase the ship's service life.
