Orders rushed, bringing iron and steel export revenue in the last 3 months to over 1 billion USD/month, accumulated in 9 months, exports reached 8.23 billion USD, up 125.4% over the same period last year. 2020.

Iron and steel export turnover has exceeded 1 billion USD/month for many months.

While many manufacturing industries have experienced a decrease in output, leading to a decline in exports in the past 2 months due to the implementation of epidemic prevention measures, the steel manufacturing industry still achieved export growth "backwarding the current". ". In the first nine months of 2021, the export of iron and steel of all kinds reached 9.75 million tons, worth $8.23 billion, up 29.3% in volume and 125.4% in value over the same period (corresponding to the same period last year). with an increase of $4.582 billion).

It is worth mentioning that the export turnover of iron and steel for many months has exceeded 1 billion USD/month. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the peak was in August with a value of $ 1.197 billion, a slight decrease in September but still reached $ 1.174 billion, while the performance level of July was also approximately $ 1.1 billion.

Thus, iron and steel is the "billion dollar" export group with the highest growth rate in the past 9 months.

Our country's iron and steel products are mainly exported to ASEAN, China, EU, and US markets. In major markets, the export volume in Asia tends to decrease, but in the EU and US markets, the growth is outstanding.

Specifically, by the end of September, steel exports to ASEAN reached more than 3 million tons, down 1.7% over the same period in 2020; to China reached 2.12 million tons, down 16.2%.

Meanwhile, exports to the EU reached 1.7 million tons, up 7.5 times; to the US reached 665,000, an increase of 4.5 times.

The increase in iron and steel exports is not only in 9 months of 2021 but also in 2020, export activities have always been active. In 2020, while many major export industries lost billions of dollars because of the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the export of iron and steel products still reached 9.86 million tons, with a turnover of nearly $5.26 billion, an increase. 25.1% in value compared to 2019; although the average export price last year decreased by 15.5%, to about 533 USD/ton, data from the Vietnam Import and Export Report 2020 shows.

However, from the beginning of 2021 until now, the steel industry is continuing to face difficulties due to the galloping increase of input materials, which are all import-dependent. However, despite the increasing momentum of raw materials and finished steel, export activities are still active due to increased demand in many major markets.

According to the assessment of the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA), iron and steel exports are facing many advantages when the demand for steel in many markets is increasing very strongly, since the beginning of 2021 has witnessed a recovery. stronger than expected steel demand, leading to impressive export growth, especially for those with large production capacity.

Exports witnessed an acceleration to the market that in 2020 has a decrease, which is the EU, which increased by 7.5 times over the same period, and this has more or less impact from the Vietnam Free Trade Agreement. - EU (EVFTA) has been in effect for more than 1 year.

In 2020, Vietnam's steel exports to the EU reached 309,000 tons with a value of 235.5 million USD, down 6.9% in volume and 1% in value compared to 2019.

Recently, the World Steel Association has released an update on its Short-Term Outlook for 2021 and 2022 with many forecasting steel demand to increase by 4.5% in 2021 and reach 1,855.4 million tons after increasing 0.1% growth in 2020.

In 2022, steel demand will increase by 2.2% to 1,896.4 million tons, assuming the vaccine is injected globally, the spread of Covid-19 virus variants will be less damaging and indirect. period than in previous periods, and this continues to facilitate iron and steel export activities of Vietnamese enterprises.

In the EU, the recovery in steel demand starting from the second half of 2020 is accelerating, with all steel-using sectors showing a positive recovery despite the continuing wave of infections.

In Japan, steel demand is recovering gradually with increasing exports, investment and consumption. Manufacturing, especially autos and machinery, are leading the recovery, civil construction continues to underpin steel demand. In 2022, a recovery in consumption and investment is expected to support positive growth in all steel-using sectors.
